I think we would mock VW if they came out with a car called "Das Volkswagen". "Das Auto" is a great marketing slogan while "La Ferrari is a pompous, unimaginative model name.

Because Das Auto is just a marketing slogan whereas LaFerrari is a model name and a successor to legendary super cars like the 288GTO, F40, F50, and the almost equally ridiculously named Ferrari Enzo Ferrari. "Ferrari TheFerrari" is a stupid fucking name.

As others have said, it's the application. Ferrari aren't talking metaphysically about "the car" as a marketing concept, La Ferrari is the actually model of a car... so you just named your car the Ferrari the Ferrari.
